Art in the 1900's
Art had many developments in the 1900's. The following videos were chosen because I wanted to learn more about how difficult creating art was in the countries of Italy and Germany. I specifically wanted to know more about the art in Germany because of the movies called The Monuments Men which focuses strictly on rediscovering the art that Hitler tried to hide and destroy.
One of the major points started in Italy with the idea of futurism. In the Futurism: The Art/ Life Revolution video, it discusses Marinetti's influence on futurism. He said it was time for Italy to industrialize and become more modern like the rest of the world. Marinetti termed futurism as a time to reawaken intellectuals who were stuck on things from the past. His manifesto stated to destroy what was holding people in the past, cancel things such as museums, libraries, and academies. He wanted the world to focus on new things such as the speed of powerful cars, locomotives, and airplanes. At this time the idea of women was reclaimed to have positive values such as pleasure and sensuality. Such ideas could be used for propaganda and provoke the ideas of futurism. The ideas from this video relate to the readings from the text on Italian Futurism. Italy was known to represent the past. Many young artists rebelled against Italy, determined to celebrate the future of modernism and industrialization. Artists and writers saw it as Italy's decline of status because they were not keeping up with the rest of the world. Marinetti's manifesto was a huge mark in the establishment of futurism and how it influenced art. Futurists expressed time based studies and mechanics of animal and human movement in their pieces. This development also greatly impacted the politics in Italy as well. The art was used to send a message to the people of Italy, and also all of Europe.
Another huge moment in history that must be noted is the art of Nazi Germany. The video In the Shadow of Hitler: German Art, discusses how the Nazi movement was initiated due to their hatred of modern art. Hitler had very conservative tastes and believed that modern art was sent from Russia to plague the people of Germany. The art sent was that of Jewish dealers which would infect Germany with the ideas of cubism and other modern developments. The school Bauhaus became to modern with its architecture even, and the Nazi's came and destroyed it. Hitler chose what was good Aryan art to exhibit, but he also had another exhibit for art. This was called the degenerate exhibit and it showcased works that the Nazi's mocked and joked at in beliefs that it was plaguing their society. This video relates to the Art in Nazi Germany readings. Hitler made the degenerate art disappear in time. He used this exhibit to manipulate the people of his country into believing that they should loathe art that depicted what he considered bad. The arts that were rejected were those that were experimental, personal, and non-representational.
The readings and the videos provide greater clarity and information of what happened at these times. More information about Marinetti's influence was disclosed in the video which was not described in depth in the readings such as how he got his manifesto in the newspaper by courting a girl whose father worked for the newspaper. The terrible things that the Nazi's did to art were also further developed in the video such as destroying the school. The videos added greater understanding to these monumental times in history which changed the world forever.
